Don’t Ever Lose Your Voice (Defining Our Own Words)

Inside the Daily Circle of dr. rhonda
I’m kinda retro and spiritual in my daily life, but also with lots of diversity, yet very strong liberal with a few conservative values and opinions (that’s a lot to manage everyday)!
I am currently reading two books Further Along the Road Less Traveled: The Unending Journey Toward Spiritual Growth by M. Scott Peck, M.D. and From Purpose to Promise Driven Life by Therman E. Evans M.D., Ph.D.
I am listening to finally got into Chrisette Michelle’s latest CD Epiphany but I AM is still close by; Everything Jill Scott; Maxwell (welcome back), finally gave Day 26 a rest (Love the concept of making the band, my graduate students and I are writing a paper about it); I’ve been listening to the old Jackson 5 songs I have their first two albums on CD (I also still have their first three albums scratches and all) and; Will Downing’s Love’s the Place to Be from back in 1993!
Favorite Quotes, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about a quote from one of my spiritual mentors’, ancestor Dr. Mildred McKinney, from her poem titled Renewal that is in my book The Healing Power of the Circle. In the poem she talks about all the things she chooses to do today, such as, choosing a new season and closing the door to yesterday, finding light, joy and understanding in the moment of choosing.  She ends the poem with one of my favorite quotesAnd so it is…
Resources for Young Adults and Their Families
Young adults and their families are particularly impacted by the most challenging problems in today’s society.  While they continue to reinvent themselves by expanding their knowledge and following their own path, they are not immune to setbacks and unexpected consequences due to the economy and other stressors faced by many other Americans.  Unemployment, lack of medical insurance, rising coast of education, returning to live with parents, problems with drug abuse and domestic violence are just a few social problems that impact young adults at growing rates.  Here are some resources to help build knowledge and link young adults with resources to help combat some of these common social problems.

Connecting with Young Adults

“A Message From dr. rhonda”

The first several months hosting “Real Talk” have been very exciting. I have learned so much from my guest, which empowers me as an educator and advocate for the needs of young adults and their families.  While the current economy and health care, are major challenges for young adults today, many young adults are persisting towards their goals and “living their dreams”.  From the interviews I’ve conducted over the first several weeks, young adults commitment to education, family and their careers was evident in every single interview.  Their desire to be understood, valued and respected by their parents and other older adults, was also a central theme in their discussions.  Their need to blaze new trails, be innovative and honor their entrapenuerial spirit was also clear.  I finished each interview with great pride and a clear sense that the future will be in good hands!  I’m looking forward to continueing the discussions and facilitating an opportunity for young adults to “find their voice” and define their lives on their own terms.
