Dating back to the days of slavery, the African-American culture is responsible for the birth of the original form of gospel music. Based primarily on slave spirituals, genuine gospel singers "testify" through song, lifting up both their trials and victories before God. Pioneers of gospel music include Mahalia Jackson and Al Green. However, this genre also took another path. Southern Gospel (sometimes called Country Gospel) developed a devoted following with performers including George Beverly Shea, Cliff Barrows and The Gaither Vocal Band, just to name a few. Gospel singers combine blues and jazz along with other musical techniques in order to create the distinctive styles of gospel music. Because a gospel singer is usually accompanied by a piano or guitar, only a small amount of stage space is needed to accommodate these performers.
